newspoke last night
i turned 26 yesterday, and i spent the evening at a NEWSPEAK show that turned out to be a pretty interesting experience for me. the first half consisted of rzewski’s “coming together,” david little’s “sweet light crude,” and then one of the strangest exchanges i’ve ever heard, in which both david and rzewski were “interviewed” by WYNC’s terrance mcknight. actually, rzewski took over and turned the focus to david, asking him a few specific questions about the nature of newspeak’s mission and music, drawing particular attention to the phrase “obliterating the boundaries between classical and rock” which appeared in the program, and generally living up to his reputation as brilliant irreverent bastard. rzewski apparantly talked through the second half of the show, including his own piece “the price of oil part 2,” and my new piece “my catalonia” and oscar bettison’s “breaking and entering.” (overheard was: “see! see, they’re not obliterating anything!!”) not that there’s anything wrong with that - bad ettiquete at carnegie hall maybe, but not the brooklyn lyceum. (maybe.) i wonder if clips from this conversation will be broadcast on WYNC or at least streamed online.
i’m not entirely happy with my piece “my catalonia,” but newspeak performed it really well and being there was a great way to spend my birthday. at the same time, jody redhage was performing “warning song” down at the greenwich house at a composers concordance concert, and that apparently went well too. the night was punctuated with much partying with friends from all over, and by now eileen is on her way to australia for a gig with lisa moore and so percussion.
