We Cannot Leave
here’s another movement from my piece Privilege, as premiered by Volti last month in San Francisco.
the text is from a black South African anti-Apartheid song about the forced removals in the 1950’s of nonwhite residents from integrated neighborhoods into segregated townships. it was translated from Xhosa by Mollie Stone and Patiswa Nombona:
we cannot leave
this land of our ancestors
on this earth
we are being killed by the monster
on this earth
shuku, shuku [the sound of the train]
oh, mother, it’s leaving me behind
i want to get on the train
to get on the train in the morning
i want
oh, mother, it’s leaving me behind
